Janet Reed was born in New York City and grew up in the suburbs. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, Reed co-founded the off-Broadway theatre Primary Stages Company (PSC). At PSC, she created the Late-Nite Sketchbook series and the New American Writers Group, which helps emerging writers develop new works. She co-wrote and performed in the sketch comedies Beyond Bloomingdale's and Slim and Vicious with Diane Bank at New York's West Bank Cafe and The Comic Strip in New York City. Reed's comedy Making Book was produced at Primary Stages and published by Samuel French, Inc. In addition to playwriting, she has written for daytime television, developed screenplays and authored children's books. Reed's first picture book, Don't Call Me Pruneface! was published by Hyperion Books for Children in 2010.
