Paul Fleischman has written plays, novels, poetry and nonfiction known for innovation and exciting performance possibilities. His collection of verbal duets, Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices, received the 1989 Newbery Medal, children's literature's highest honor. Breakout, alternating between prose and play, was a 2003 National Book Award finalist. His novels built from monologues, Seedfolks and Bull Run, have been widely read and performed, as has his 50-voice aural collage, Seek. A devotee of chamber music, shadow theater and string figures, Fleischman lives on the central coast of California.
