Robert S. Cohen

Robert S. Cohen has written music for theatre, orchestra and dance. In addition to the Richard Rogers Award for Suburb, he has received awards from the American Music Center and Meet the Composer. His music/theatre work for baritone and orchestra, Edison Invents, based on the life and work of Thomas Edison, commissioned by the Geraldine Dodge Foundation, was premiered by the Westfield Symphony in 2005. Other recent works include a ballet for string quartet (A Day in the Life); the choral works Sprig of Lilac (recorded by the St. MartinÕs Chamber Choir); Peter Quince at the Clavier, Genesis Part I: Creation for chorus, brass and percussion, and Three Spirituals. His most recent composition is Of Eternity Considered as a Closed System for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Cohen has served as resident composer for the National Shakespeare Company, the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival and the Manitoba Theater Center and composed the scores for the musicals God in Concert: (One Night Only), Sabbat, Astaroth and Sunday Comix. Cohen also authored the short-story collection, The Half-Life of Pizza and Other Slices. He is a graduate of Brown University and Queens College and a member of The Dramatists Guild, ASCAP and the American Music Center.
