Stephen Unwin is an experienced British theatre and opera director with more than a hundred professional productions to his name. He was born in Budapest in 1959 and graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1982. He has directed at the National Theatre, the Royal Opera House, the Royal Court Theatre and many other leading British theatres and opera companies, including six plays by Ibsen and five by Noel Coward. He founded English Touring Theatre in 1997 and, in 2008, opened the Rose Theatre Kingston with Sir Peter Hall. He has worked with many leading actors at all stages of their career, including Tilda Swinton, Alan Cumming and Simon Russell Beale, and has taught in colleges and universities in Britain and the United States. He has written eight books on theatre and drama for leading British publishers, as well as several translations of Ibsen, Schnitzler, Brecht and others. His second son, Joe, is profoundly disabled, and Unwin is a well-respected campaigner for the rights and dignities of learning-disabled people. All Our Children, which is dedicated to Joe, is Unwin’s first play.
