Synopsis
First produced at the Haymarket in London, this humorous and yet poignant play concerns an old couple's attempt to attract a little attention to themselves and thus avoid starvation. The critic for The Daily Telegraph wrote, "Its theme digs into the imagination and stays there long after the play is over," while the critic from The Guardian wrote, "Comedy explodes from the smallest incident." The scheme devised by this couple is to appear to be taken hostage and held in their own apartment. Their hope is that someone will become aware of their desperate straits and that help—a decent meal, anyway—will follow. The results are often funny and, at the same time, a little heartbreaking. This is an unusual and provocative play for a cast of three.
