Synopsis
What happens when a shy, aspiring writer from the Midwest comes to the Big Apple in search of fame and fortune? For Michael Caldwell, life becomes a series of hilarious encounters with the unpredictable residents of his dilapidated apartment house. Among them are Marshall Ryan, a commercial actor who specializes in portraying inanimate objects; Tanya Romanov, a Russian ballerina on the lam from the KGB; and Philomena Della Vecchia, a wisecracking actress. Phil may be the woman of Michael's dreams if he can just keep her quiet long enough to tell her. To retain his own sanity, Michael retreats to his fantasies, only to find that the world of his imagination is even more nerve-wracking than the reality surrounding him!

This play ... was the perfect play for a "building" year in our high school theater. After losing 18 very strong seniors, I was worried about what play I could do that would utilize new talent. It worked beautifully.
This play is hilarious! It is great for students because it allows them to experiment with character acting.
A delightful script which had us laughing out loud in many places when first reading. Our cast has thoroughly enjoyed working on this production. Broad characters and creative use of plot devices.
Hints, Tips, and Tricks
Be very careful that transitions to and from the fantasy scenes are tight; ensure actors practice quick changes surrounding fantasy sequences--their costumes reflect the passage of time coming out of fantasy scenes without much time for changing.
We selected the 1970s as the setting; it worked well and the costuming was an audience favorite. The characters of Michael and Phil need to be played by strong actors.
