Across the street at the funeral parlor a triple funeral is taking place. Bessie wants to go—she attends all funerals since Papa died—but her domineering older sister, Ella, forbids it and tells her to finish the housework. Ella also taunts her brother. Papa willed all the property to her because neither Claude nor Bessie was dependalbe. As the three wrangle over Papa's will, they are stratled to see Cousin Alice enter the funeral parlor. Cousin Alice is their only living relative, and lives two thousand miles away! Now the three make other startling discoveries: Their silver and china are packed, as though for moving; their best clothes are gone from the closets; the strongbox has been broken into. Also Ella's calendar clock, which has always been right, now shows the wrong date; they even fine their three names entering in the family Bible as having died two days ago! The play moves rapidly to an amazing climax.
