Synopsis

Escape to Paris in search of the true meaning of love in the delectable The 13th of Paris. Qu'est-ce que c'est l'amour? What is love? In this charming and theatrical romantic comedy, Vincent takes a spontaneous trip from his life in Chicago to the 13th arrondissement of Paris, carrying only a suitcase filled with the surprising love letters of his late grandparents. Terrified that the love between him and his girlfriend, Annie, won't live up to the love in his grandparents' letters, Vincent seeks romantic advice from a dapper ghost in a pinstripe suit—his Parisian grandfather, Jacques. Jacques is appalled when Vincent describes the manners of 21st-century dating and gives his grandson a crash course in finding real romance and listening to his heart. The lesson begins with Jacques recreating the elaborate ways he wooed Vincent's grandmother, Chloe, but is interrupted in the middle of the night by the rambunctious visit of Jessica, Annie's best friend from high school, and her husband, William. Jessica and William introduce Vincent to a whole different kind of love and open his eyes to just how much he means to Annie. Will Vincent learn how to see the romance in his own life? Is the love he imagines possible in the 21st century? A delightful, whimsical play, The 13th of Paris is guaranteed to inspire the writing of good old-fashioned love letters. This play was commissioned by South Coast Repertory, developed at The New Harmony Project, premiered at City Theatre in Pittsburgh, and received the Edgerton New American Play Award.

Media Reviews

"A romantic comedy that plays fancifully with time and space while its young American hero encounters the eternal spirit of Parisian amour. Smart has interesting things to say about life and love … about the larger differences which both unite and divide us. He doesn't solve the enigma of love, of course, but he makes us feel good about love's possibility." -Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
