Seventeen-year-old Susan, who has attempted suicide, lies in a coma. Her doctor says, "Whether she lives or dies now is a matter of her own will." What goes on in Susan's mind is the play, which invites the audience to deduce Susan's decision regarding life or death. Thoroughly researched, this play is both an enthralling theatrical event and the basis for a useful exploration of a tragic problem.
This provides an excellent storyline that many teens can identify with.
Girl in the Mirror was chosen by our drama class of high school students who felt its theme was relevant and could bring teen suicide to the public consciousness. One young actress felt very strongly about the power of this play to speak to those teens considering suicide as their only option. We all felt this play offered hope to those who had lost their faith in themselves and others.
The play is fabulous. The way it is written leaves the audience wondering. I love that they have to think for themselves.
Girl in the Mirror deals with a serious issue in a way that engages young actors and audiences. It looks at the devastation of divorce and the reality of teen suicide, and it doesn't pull its punches.
Be sure that your actors know how they want to make their audience feel.
