Synopsis

This is the story of Mathilde Loisel, the young wife of a struggling junior clerk in a government office in Paris. She yearns for all that wealth can buy: social position, parties and beautiful clothes. When she and her husband are invited to an important ball, her pride impels her to borrow a valuable necklace. Her triumph at the ball turns to despair when she discovers that the necklace is missing. Rather than admit her loss, Mathilde and her husband buy an exact duplicate and spend their lives depriving themselves, working at menial jobs. The tragic irony of the play occurs when Mathilde finds that the original necklace was an inexpensive imitation!

Customer Reviews

Very strong play. We won 2nd place in our middle school One Act competition with this play! Super easy show. Small cast. You are really able to focus on so many aspects of the play without the struggles of huge cast or needing tons of stage directions.
