As California entered a “stay at home” order due to the coronavirus pandemic, UC Santa Barbara’s LAUNCH PAD commissioned 24 distinguished playwrights to pen monologues and short plays inspired by the prompt “Alone, Together” and written to be performed live on Zoom. These 39 extraordinary pieces reflect the moment of lockdown and capture our longing for connection. This is a collection born of a moment, but one that will live on for the ages.

After spending 12 years in St. Elizabeths Hospital for incompetency, literary lion and ferocious anti-Semite Ezra Pound faces the terrifying prospect of being released. At first, Pound’s treatment by a young psychiatrist, Ann Polley, seems promising, but then the techniques become disturbing and Ann’s true purpose is revealed. Pound explores whether words can be as powerful as actions, whether revenge can be just, and whether sanity is possible when we’re made to see the world as it is and not as we would have it.

The young woman tells the prince the story of the abandoned castle where a cursed princess named Rose pricked her hand on a spindle and fell into a deep sleep. As she sleeps, she dreams, and her dreams begin to answer her life-long questions. When Rose awakes, she and the world around her have changed, and the prince joins her as she emerges into her new life.
