Synopsis

"The Gift" is the drama of a mother's battle with breast cancer as seen through the eyes and felt through the heart of her 16-year-old daughter. Stephanie is rocked by her mother's crisis, but a joyful affirmation of life comes from that struggle; a girl becomes a woman. Stephanie's triumph is moving and the role can be a tour de force for a young actress. The play has several strong monologues and two-person scenes for auditions and competition. Originally produced by the Organic Theatre Company in Chicago, the play was commissioned by Hope Cancer Care Network. Its message and powerful story make it excellent for outreach programs.

Customer Reviews

It is an excellent drama which shows a family dealing with breast cancer. It was great for contest use.

Patricia Hagedorn, Illini Bluffs High School, Glasford, IL

This script brought both laughter and tears to our audience. Our cast and tech crew won many awards at the UIL Middle School Competition.

Christine Ponsford, Sun Ridge Middle School, El Paso, Texas

A wonderful, touching, challenging piece of theatre that allows students to explore, discuss and think about cancer and all the repercussions of a cancer diagnosis. (Very cathartic as well.) Also, a great small ensemble piece!
