Uncle Fy and his niece plant 14 white birches along a lonely dirt road in the woods. A violent storm uproots the elder trees, who were the caretakers of these 14, leaving them to fend for themselves. Despite the best efforts of a few of the trees, the group splits into rival groups, each living on opposite sides of the road, as they race to grow to the sky and crowd each other out in an insatiable hunger for sunlight.
