In this extraordinary play, a "room" and a "cage" and "people" and "captive birds" all become confused until a dramatic climax in which we suddenly see reality. Six women live in a locked room, each absorbed in her own petty interest and in placating the "Mistress" who takes care of them. Then a "Wild One" is thrust in among them. She talks of breaking out of the room to find freedom. She troubles the others who remain secure in their cage, and they all join against her in the shattering conclusion to this unforgettable play that offers eight actresses an unusual opportunity.
This play gave my talented cast the challenge they needed to go above and beyond. No one steals the show; they equally shine. A colleague said, "This is the best play you've ever done."
A strong "character" play for eight accomplished actresses. The "sweeties" and wild one all have wonderful character possibilities, and the mistress is pure evil.
A striking drama with a sense of dark reality. Flexible staging allows plenty of room for creative interpretation. We all build our own cages, lack the courage to step out of them and trample on those who try. Not a pleasant picture but one clearly and sharply etched by this play.
Cagebirds was fun to direct, perform and watch. It allowed my cast and crew to design creatively and to create compelling characters.
... Make sure you give them time to really discover the birds they relate to and the many underlining themes. I think this was the most fun they had during table work as they tried to unravel the meaning behind their lines and actions.
